A great pool should feel like more than something added to the backyard. It should shape the entire outdoor space.
For this custom pool project in Margaritaville, located in Hardeeville South Carolina, New Wave Pools created a private backyard retreat centered around a freeform swimming pool, raised spa and expansive travertine pool deck. The finished space combines comfort, functionality and plenty of room to enjoy the outdoors throughout the day and well into the evening.
A Custom Pool Designed for the Space
The swimming pool features a flowing, freeform shape that softens the geometry of the surrounding home and screened enclosure. A large shallow lounging area creates a comfortable place to relax in the water, while curved steps provide an easy transition into the deeper portion of the pool.
At one end, the raised circular spa adds another layer to the design and gives homeowners a separate place to unwind without feeling disconnected from the pool itself.
The pool and spa are framed with contrasting coping and tile details that help define the curves and give the entire design a finished, custom appearance.
Travertine Adds Warmth Around the Pool
A generous travertine surface surrounds the pool, creating a clean and cohesive pool deck with plenty of space for lounge chairs, entertaining and everyday use.
The natural variations in the stone bring warmth and texture to the backyard without competing with the water. Travertine also works particularly well in pool environments because of its classic appearance and comfortable feel underfoot.
Rather than squeezing the pool into the available space, the design gives the water and deck room to breathe. That extra deck area helps turn the backyard into a true outdoor living space rather than simply a place to swim.
A Screened Pool Built for Outdoor Living
The entire pool area is enclosed within a large screened structure, creating a more comfortable environment while preserving views of the surrounding landscape and pond.
Ceiling fans help keep air moving, and integrated lighting transforms the enclosure after sunset. Blue accent lighting along the structure creates a dramatic nighttime atmosphere, while warmer lighting around the deck and landscaping keeps the space inviting.
The result is a pool area that feels completely different at night without changing the underlying design.
An Outdoor Kitchen Completes the Backyard
The outdoor kitchen and grilling station make the pool area even more functional. Built-in stainless steel appliances, storage and countertop space provide a convenient place for cooking and entertaining without having to move constantly between the backyard and the indoor kitchen.
It is an important supporting feature, but the pool remains the centerpiece of the space. The kitchen, travertine deck, screened enclosure and lighting all work around it rather than competing for attention.
Quality Hardscapes & PorchMasters contributed to the surrounding outdoor living elements, helping create a finished backyard where the hardscape and pool design feel like one coordinated project.
A Backyard Designed Around the Pool
What stands out most about this Margaritaville project is how complete the space feels.
The freeform pool, raised spa, travertine deck and screened enclosure were designed to work together from every angle. During the day, the space feels open and connected to the landscape. At night, lighting changes the mood entirely and turns the pool into the visual centerpiece of the backyard.
For homeowners considering a custom swimming pool in the Lowcountry, this project is a good example of what can happen when the pool is treated as the foundation of the entire outdoor living design.
New Wave Pools designs and builds custom pools throughout Bluffton, Hilton Head Island, Hardeeville, Ridgeland and surrounding communities, creating backyard spaces tailored to the way each homeowner wants to live, relax and entertain.
